Cheerios and Croissants
I have a collection of extraordinarily wise friends. You are probably one of them. I hope someday to be able to distill wisdom myself, but for now I am content to garner it from them — and attempt to apply it to my own life.
In preparation for our trip, my wise friends calmed my anxieties, helped me think through scenarios, gave helpful warnings, and repeatedly talked me down from the ledge whenever that nagging question came screaming through: “What in the world were we thinking??!!??”
One told me: “Wherever you go, you take yourselves.” (Ain’t that the truth?!)
One told me: “Don’t expect your kids to fully appreciated it in the moment.”
One told me: “Be sure to set aside time for your marriage, too.”
And then more than a few asked: “WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU GOING TO FEED ALL THOSE PEOPLE?”
My thoughts, exactly. Forget about lifelong mission and character development — WHAT ARE WE GOING TO EAT?? Food has always been important to our family — quantity, predictability, regularity, reliability. We are not appreciators of fine cuisine or international flair. We are appreciators of routine and familiarity. We are flexible about language, sleeping arrangements, cleanliness, political uprisings…. but where oh where is the 2% milk???
So for those who wonder about what in the world the Wildpeople are eating, here are a few scenes to peek at our family table (or more often, our family car hood). Bon appetit!
What I’d give for onr of those pain au chocolat right now…well, I’m off to eat my Raisin Bran…
Favorite post yet!
Makes me remember Emma chowing down on croissants in Quebec.
Sounds pretty fancy ! Pancakes by Popper hare as Maggie slept over last night – a treat for her and us too!!!!
Love it, Suby! So glad you are staying put for a while so to keep the food choices predictable! And delicious!
Breakfast food is not to messed with! Hurray for Cheerios!
Plus, you are feeding your kid’s minds a Spirit of Adventure! Your car hood “table” reminds me of my childhood “Navy family” adventures and how we would have our picnics (breakfast, lunch & dinner) by the side of a beautiful country lane…table & chairs not required! So proud of how adventuresome you are my dear Sistah! Love, prayers & encouragement, Ruthie
Yup. Being the mom of three growing boys, too, that was MY question to you! Looks like you are doing great. Love the bowls of cheerios with each person’s assigned color knife/fork combo peaking out of the top. Especially laughed at the sandwich photo…each plate just a little different…one sandwich cut, the extra half sandwich with the heel of the bread, one plate with pretzels, a plate or two with some other thing (a piece of biscuit?)…too funny! Missing you all but am so happy to keep in touch via this awesome blog. Really enjoying all the photos. The memories you are making are beyond incredible!
