Adventure by Other

It didn’t take us long to fill up this small room in Iceland with our bags and gear. In this photo, E has taken a break from open bed gymnastics, H is putting on his shoes, W is (unseen) in the shower, and S — bless her heart — is trying to bring some semblance of order to the chaos that has carried the day.

So went our first day in Iceland. (And it was awesome.)

The five of us are on this crazy journey together — and I was reminded earlier today that this year-long adventure is made up of FIVE ADVENTURES, not just one of my own design.

A moment of conflict earlier in the day led to a parenting moment. The specifics aren’t important … but it led to a reflective time — and a long walk — through one of Iceland’s most beautiful and desolate-looking places, the Blue Lagoon.

One of my sons is so primed for adventure, so ready to seek the edges of the world, so eager to go, go, go, explore, explore, explore, and discover, discover, discover. Part of that emerging passion led him to cross some rules lines. My response led to some conflict.

I realized during some reflection that he NEEDS this adventure. (WE need the rules, too. See photo above.) So as his parent, I want to stoke that adventure fire. There will no doubt be more conflict. We will get through that.

But I’m so proud of him for this new passion for adventure. I love him. And I can’t wait to see where it takes him.
