Uncertain Waters

I’ve never had a great desire to publish photos of me shirtless, wearing a bathing suit. However, I want to pass along a memorable moment of boy courage … and these photos — and one video! — are the way to do it.

The boys and I have been doing a lot of diving in to uncertain Adriatic waters over the last few days. The waters are uncertain because they’re unfamiliar, because sea monsters surely live in these waters, and because the water is often bracingly cold.

Today, we upped the ante.

S heard about cliff diving in the area … so we went hunting cliffs. On a ferry. To an island. Across sheets of hardened lava rocks that mangled our shoe soles. To the edge of a precipice. Looking down in to the tiniest of inlets, carved sharply in the ancient shore rocks by a frothy sea.

The boys HAD been excited about cliff jumping. Until then.

S and I didn’t push. And Daddy went first …

Each boy in his own way … started to weigh the I WANT TO JUMP with NO WAY AM I GOING TO JUMP. No way! Yes! No way! Yes!

Then, ALL THREE jumped. No hesitation. Toward the uncertain waters. Through fear. And in to deeper courage.
