Twilight Confessional
Two men recently explained their life’s calling during separate conversations here in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Khem described his birthplace among the country’s poor and persecuted ethnic minority, where his parents — both farmers — sacraficed a great deal to send him and his siblings to college. He is now a lawyer, committed to bringing justice for these ethnic minorities.
Sid described his birthplace in rural New Hampshire, how his father’s early death left him and his mother destitute. A once-a-week music teacher from out-of-town recognized a musical gift in young Sid … and, through a variety of twists and turns, the boy learned how to use his gift. He went on — goes on — to share that gift with audiences, congregations, and students.
I admire these two men and their clear sense of calling. I’m DESPERATE FOR this clear sense of calling. (Isn’t that ok?) Over the next week, we’re going to be spending time with a group of people who have even a clearer sense of calling in their lives.
I’ve tried to set aside time on our journey to reflect on calling — who I am, who I might Be, and whether there is Calling in the calling.
I wrote lyrics about this very topic to go with a pop tune I’ve recently composed … but here’s where it gets interesting: I can’t remember how these lyrics are supposed to work with the music! Still trying to figure that one out ….
Twilight Confessional Teacher, Preacher Are you listening? My heart wants Excellence But stumble, stumble If anything Thunder, thunder Out comes the hunter Warrior, warrior He makes the call In the black of the night I’m swept by the bright Three stars, three stars I’m in a fall … Orion, there you are When you gave me the wheel You didn’t show me the way So I’m blinded by within Unprepared for the fray So where do I turn? Have I not heard your voice? Of the path that I’m on Do I really have a choice? Thunder, thunder Out comes the hunter Warrior, warrior He makes the call In the black of the night I’m swept by the bright Three stars, three stars I’m in a fall … Orion, there you are How do I stay true? It’s the constellation, or you I thought I’d be the warrior Instead I’m on my knees Thunder, thunder Out comes the hunter Warrior, warrior He makes the call In the black of the night I’m swept by the bright Three stars, three stars I’m in a fall … Orion, there you are

This strikes a deep chord. Love it.
