Under the Arms
This was the scene last night after a championship high school basketball game in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The Tigers — our new team — had just defeated their rivals, the Eagles, in a nail-biter. (The son of our current hosts is a Tiger guard.)
In the photo, the Tigers were just about to take a victory lap under the arms of their classmates and parents.
It has been a long time since we heard screaming teenagers inside a gym cheering for a sports team. The experience wrapped us in something so emotional … so deafening … so familiar … so welcome … and so wonderful.
