The One That Got Away
So yes, we screeched to a halt on the highway shoulder, flung open the doors, and gave chase to what we thought must surely be a massive herd of reindeer just over the next volcanic rise. I stopped to take some photos of a mossy stream, and by the time I resumed the hunt, J and the boys were already on the next ridge. Three ridges later, we accepted defeat and began heading back in the general direction of the unseen highway.
And then it started to rain. And the wind blew. It rained harder.
We fanned out across the lunar landscape, each hoping for the first glimpse of the car, and each second-guessing our decision to flee our car cocoon. Uphill, downhill, uphill. Mud, wind, rain.
This little clownish flower caught my eye as H and I struggled the last quarter mile. After a quick discussion, we decided the flower was encouraging us rather than laughing at us, and that if you’re going to slog through wind and rain chasing an elusive reindeer, we’d much prefer doing it together than alone.
Beautiful post, Suby! I was reading it out loud when Katie said, “This sounds like a story.” And a beautiful story. All of y’all’s posts are so encouraging. I woke up the other morning and life was feeling rather small. Then I got notice of updates to your blog and boom! the world opened up and I thought of our dear friends exploring the top of it. We love you!!
I am enjoying your beautiful photos! Finbar’s also!
Someone is lagging behind her family in frequency of posts. Just sayin’.
SOMEBODY’s got to put food on the table. Just sayin.
