Limits of Empire
Today, we WALKED the limits of empire.
The Roman empire once stretched north nearly to Scotland. We visited the remnants of that northernmost border — Hadrian’s Wall — in September. The empire’s SOUTHERN border once stretched as far as an outpost called Volubilis in central Morocco.
We were there today.
There was some eye rolling when we talked about the width and breadth of the experience, but we all agreed that it was super cool. (The boys also engaged in some pretend but realistic air soft assaults on make-believe enemies attacking from the graceful ruins. Our empty water bottles were guns.)
The experience drove home one more fact about the limits of the Roman empire — as massive as it once was:
It’s now in ruins.
